Quick Entry and Global Hotkeys
The two system-level global hotkeys for summoning the main window and the quick entry card, and the rules for changing them.
Two system-level hotkeys that work no matter which app you are in at the time. Like any other keyboard shortcut, they appear as ordinary rows in Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts and can be edited there directly; you can also just ask Klaus to change them (see below). For every rebindable key, see The Composer and the Keyboard.
- ⌘⇧K (Ctrl+Shift+K on Windows): summon the main window. If it is already in front, pressing the key again stows it away, so the same key both brings Klaus back and puts it aside; a minimized or hidden window is summoned just as readily.
- ⌘⇧Space (Ctrl+Shift+Space): open the quick entry card — a single-line input floating over the desktop. Type one sentence, press Enter, and the work is dispatched without switching back to the Klaus window first.
The card works like this:
- A frameless, translucent 680×104 window that floats above ordinary windows and appears on whichever screen your mouse is on: centered horizontally, 22% down from the top of the usable area (the usable area is what remains after the menu bar / taskbar).
- It is visible on every desktop / Space, and it can float above Klaus's own full-screen window, but it cannot float into another app's full-screen space; macOS does not grant floating panels that ability.
- Enter submits, Shift+Enter only inserts a line break, and Esc closes it (while dictating, the first Esc cancels the recording). It disappears the moment it loses focus, and it keeps no text: every summoning starts empty.
- The limit is 8000 characters, counted the way JavaScript counts them (an emoji counts as two). An empty or over-limit card does not submit.
- After you submit: the card closes, the main window is raised, and the sentence you wrote opens a new session and is sent immediately — it is never folded into your previous conversation. If the main window is not ready yet at that moment (a cold start), the text is held until it is ready, so nothing is lost.
- You can dictate in the card too, using the main window's microphone permission.
Changing the keys:
- Edit them on the settings page, or simply say "change the quick entry key to Alt+Space", "turn off the summon hotkey" or "reset the hotkeys to default". Klaus re-registers them on the spot; no restart is needed. The spelling is
CommandOrControl+Shift+K,Alt+Spaceand so on (CommandOrControlmeans ⌘ on macOS and Ctrl elsewhere); writeoffto disable anddefaultto reset. - A real modifier key is required (⌘ / Ctrl / Alt). Shift does not count: registering
Shift+Kas a global hotkey would swallow every capital K on the whole machine, so that spelling is rejected. Spellings the system cannot parse are rejected too rather than stored; storing one would mean this feature quietly stops working. - "Pressing it does nothing" usually means another app already owns that key. Ask Klaus to check the hotkey status and it reports "what the settings say" and "what this process actually managed to register" separately: when the two disagree, the key is taken, so pick another one. Note that when registration fails, the old key has already been unbound beforehand, so at that moment neither side has a key.
- Klaus itself cannot type into the card and submit it; that would mean opening a session for itself. It can only summon the card on your behalf, and summoning steals keyboard focus, so it does so only when you ask.
